I always have trouble getting people to go with me to things like concerts, plays, and movies. I’m frustrated, disappointed, and lonely. Okay, enough about that.
I was watching some of the “Most Viewed” videos on YouTube and came across a vlogger going by the username Meekakitty. She’s adorable, strange, dorky, nerdy, and hyper. I must’ve watched a couple dozen of her videos in a day.
One of these videos featured a YouTube musician, HeyKelsey, who plays mostly indie rock cover songs, with the occasional original. She’s pretty good at guitar, but her singing is just beautiful. My personal favorite is her cover of Death Cab for Cutie’s “I Will Follow You Into The Dark,” her singing in that video in particular just gives me chills. She inspired me to pick up my guitar for the first time in a month.
I learned Tegan and Sara’s “The Con,” and I love it. Pretty easy to play, but that doesn’t stop it from being fun.
I also revisited some of my old compositions. Some of them are really good, but some of them are like “What was I thinking?” I guess everyone who creates things for a living goes through that. I thought the same thing when I went through all of my old poems a month ago.
My Creative Writing professor gave an assignment in which we have to write a poem that put a twist on a well-known myth or fairytale. I have an idea for it, but I don’t know if I’m actually going to write it that way. It would be too personal and very depressing. It’s due on Wednesday, so hopefully I come up with something else.
I have written a lot of poems about girls that I’ve had crushes on in the past. I never let those girls read the poems that were about them (one of them doesn’t even know I liked her), but I’ve recently been wondering how they’d react if I let them read them now. I’d imagine it would be something like when a girl finds out that Chris Carrabba wrote a song about her. He’s written some of the saddest/angriest songs about relationships I’ve ever heard.
Today, I was playing a couple of Dashboard Confessional songs I’d learned a long time ago, “The Places You Have Come to Fear the Most” and “Age Six Racer.” I forgot how playing guitar could be a sort of therapeutic experience. Even though I couldn’t fix anything that was going wrong, it really did make me feel so much better.
Both of those songs are in 1/2-Step Down tuning. I was looking for more songs to play in that tuning and found a thread on Ultimate-Guitar.com dedicated to those songs that mentioned The Early November. They were more like Drop D then 1/2-Step Down, but I still already know a couple of songs like that. I learned how to play “Fluxy” and learned a different way to play “Baby Blue,” my two favorite tracks off TEN’s album “The Room’s Too Cold.”
I just remembered that Kenny Vasoli, from The Starting Line, provided guest vocals on “Fluxy.” I find it interesting now because I realized that both Kenny and Ace Enders, TEN’s frontman, have had their bands go on “indefinite hiatus” so that they could explore their side-projects. I found this similarity interesting considering they had worked together on a song once.
